IKEA has collaborated with electronic music artists Swedish House Mafia to launch a new range of furniture specially geared towards helping people create from home.
You know IKEA. The Swedish brand probably has an outlet near you, and chances are you've got at least one piece of furniture from the chain in your home. But now, IKEA has teamed up with another of its home country's icons, Swedish House Mafia, to release a new collection that will make your home a creative hub.
That's the thinking behind OBEGRÄNSAD, the new range launching in October, which aims to make music production (as well as other creative pursuits like digital art) easier t accomplish from home. And considering that many people have permanently shifted to working from home after the pandemic, it's a timely range that will likely appeal to many people.
Taking its name from the Swedish word for 'unlimited', OBEGRÄNSAD consists of more than 20 items, including a record player, armchair, tablet, laptop and speaker, to name but a few. And by using the insights provided by Swedish House Mafia, IKEA was able to tailor the designs of these items to meet the needs of aspiring and professional creatives working from their bedrooms and living rooms.
"Since we were kids, we have valued the IKEA approach of making things affordable and available for many people," says Swedish House Mafia. "We used to find a creative way to make IKEA furniture to accommodate our teenage lives as creatives, so the collaboration's purpose was formed around our own personal journey in life."
And while the pairing might sound like an odd one, in theory, it sounds like a match made in design heaven. "We wanted to simplify the process for people to create music," adds Swedish House Mafia. "Hopefully, our collection inspires and enables more people to be more creative within their home, and it does not have to be restricted to only music making. It can be so much more."
Designed to be affordable as well as functional, the OBEGRÄNSAD collection boasts a sleek, black aesthetic with a minimalist design that supports the technology used by at-home musicians. As Swedish House Mafia put it:" the design in our collection features a timeless theme with a distinct trace of our DNA".
Friso Wiersma, an IKEA in-house designer, adds: "Look at the collection and the complexity of it: lights, furniture, tech. That would not have been possible with just any collaboration, but collaboration is the essence of Swedish House Mafia. It's in everything they do."
