Illustrator Sergio Membrillas takes us on a tour of his bright and colourful home office

Having worked for a variety of national and international clients, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Le Monde and Wired magazine, alongside teaching illustration at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, we expected Sergio's space to be inspirational. And we weren't wrong. Here's what the illustrator had to say on his colourful work set-up.

Can you describe your space?

My studio is located in the neighbourhood of Ruzafa, in the sunny city of Valencia. The space has two rooms, with balconies – both really bright and spacious. In one of the rooms I have all of my books, and this is where I work. And I have a small living space on the other side. Sometimes my friends come and they work with me, and we make fun of it by calling it 'co-working'.

Do you have any favourite accessories, prints or pieces of furniture? Tell us the story behind them.

My plants, my book collection, the postcard I own by Eckersley, and all the prints from my friends: Till Hafenbrak, Golden Cosmos, Nicolas Burrows and Laura Junger Having their work around me feels like they are working with me every day, and I like that a lot.

What do you love about your space the most and why?

The tiles on the floor, because they are like a gigantic carpet. And the light. I am lucky to be able to enjoy my work.
