Kicking off today via London's Gillian Jason Gallery (who happen to be specialists in modern and contemporary art by women) is Heart of the Matter, a new virtual show that celebrates established and emerging female artists, just in time for International Women's Day.
Curated by Mollie E Barnes, founder of She Curates, it features new and recent works from Tracey Emin, Bridget Riley, Chantal Joffe, Jasmine Pradissitto, Sikelela Owen, Emma Prempeh, Layla Andrews, Eleanor Johnson, Sarah Jane Moon, Sahara Longe and Cecily Brown. Each artwork offers unique visions and explorations into the artist's contemporary practice.
There are strongly figurative works contrasted with expressionist and abstract pieces, making this exhibition a timeless look at contemporary female artists in and from Britain: a snapshot, if you will, of the present with a powerful and positive look towards the future.
Go online and you'll discover sculptural works by Jasmine Pradissitto, artist, researcher and environmental activist. Pradissitto is the only artist in the world creating sculpture using Noxtek, a geopolymer that absorbs pollutant gases from the air. Elsewhere, emerging artist Eleanor Johnson's dreamscapes take inspiration from old masterworks to explore the timeless relationship between humans, nature and the spiritual zone in between. Emma Prempeh, the winner of the 2019 Ingram Young Contemporary Prize, explores familial ties and generational continuity through vivid depictions of family members and their experiences.
"The last twelve months have been tough for many people in the arts," says Elli Jason Foster, director at the Gallery. "If we are able to take a step towards connecting with the upcoming young collectors and at the same time correcting some of the gender inequalities that have existed for so long in the art world then we can sincerely see great change within our reach. We're committed to this change and the artists that we work with."
Alongside the exhibition, the gallery is presenting a series of private curated online tours and art talks with artists via Zoom and IGTV. To find out more visit @gillianjasongallery on Instagram or www.gillianjason.com for a complete list of works.
Heart of the Matter at Gillian Jason Gallery runs from today, 8 March, through to 15 April 2021.
