Murmurations: Artists pay homage to flocking birds with cardboard light installation

If you've ever had the pleasure of witnessing a murmuration of starlings, a swooping mass of thousands of birds whirling in the sky above you, then you'll surely appreciate this stunning art installation by Seattle and Amsterdam-based design studio Graypants.

Mimicking what you'd expect to see over Brighton's blackened West Pier each November, the hanging sculpture is made up of hundreds of LED lights made out of cardboard – all inspired by the breathtaking natural phenomenon of murmurations.

Each pendant within the supposed 'flock' is harmoniously connected with its neighbours. Graypants explained: "The avian spectacle is translated into dynamic installations, with captivating three-dimensional forms. By composing light in this way, we create a powerful collection that’s poised to tip, always on the verge of instant transformation."

Murmurations was created for Milan Design Week. To discover more, visit www.graypants.com.
