Whichever creative path we choose in life, it's reassuring to know that we can do anything we like and change course whenever we want to. For Susie Stone, the award-winning designer, couturier, and artist has come full-circle.
Born and raised in south London, Susie studied fine art at Leeds University, receiving First Class Honours for her work in painting and sculpture. A love of fashion led her into a different career, opening her first atelier in 2010 making bespoke clothes on Bermondsey Street.
Here, she was committed to creating bespoke fashions for women as "individual and unique as they are". But after seven years of making one-off luxury garments for her clients, she has returned to her roots as a fine artist and moved into fashion illustration. The creative freedom of this process reignited Susie's love of creating art and informs the content and style of her work today.
In her latest works, Style in Colour, you can certainly see Susie's designer eye. Hers is an art that is rooted in a sense of personal style, and each one of the women that Susie depicts has her own personality, conveyed via posture, clothing, and accessories. As was her goal with the clothing she made, Susie wants these artworks to remind women of how unique they are, through paintings and silkscreens that ooze confidence and attitude.
On show at Eames Fine Art Print Room on Bermondsey Street, London, from 5 August until 23 August, the series is also available as either original paintings or in limited edition screen prints.
