The Portrait of Humanity 2020 shortlist has been announced today, and it's revealed during the most significant global awakening of our lifetime.
Greta Thunberg on Stage by Eric Demers
Produced by the publisher behind the British Journal of Photography, the annual awards aim to show that across oceans and borders, there is more that unites us than sets us apart. Inspired by themes of individuality, community and unity, the 200 shortlisted images showcase the many faces of humanity and the everyday moments that bind us.
They have been brought together in a new book, Portrait of Humanity – Vol 2, published by Hoxton Mini Press. Shot by photographers of all levels, all over the world, they feature "arresting faces and touching anecdotes to remind us of our common struggles, our deep bonds and, perhaps most importantly in light of the Covid-19 crisis, the restorative power of community".
One such image is by Eric Demers of Greta Thunberg, standing on stage at a recent rally. Describing the moment, Eric said: "When Greta Thunberg announced she was going to be in Montreal for a march, everyone knew it was going to be huge. With 500,000 protesters, it was the biggest demonstration in Canadian history. She turned towards the sun and cracked a little smile. I did too."
The 30 winning images and three winning series are set to be announced this September. You can pre-order a copy of the new book, Portrait of Humanity Vol 2, from Hoxton Mini Press.
