A new community project has launched in Old Trafford that hopes to bring some art and positivity to the city streets. Kicking off with the first of many murals is Together We Are One in Seymour Park, a bold and colourful piece made in collaboration between Manchester designer Robert Lomas and local artist Becki Miller.
The OT Art Trail was an idea that came about during the pandemic, which calls on the city borough to help create six large murals on walls and buildings around Old Trafford, providing a trail for people to safely explore and enjoy. Organised by Lynda Sterling at OT Creative SPACE and funded by Arts Council England, the theme of the project is "community and togetherness".
This first mural, informed by community feedback, features bold and rainbow-coloured letters to form the word 'Together'. "Each letter design is unique and connected to each other to celebrate how great and diverse the community is in Old Trafford," Lomas tells Creative Boom. "Other visual themes that run through the piece are rainbows, clouds and a strawberry that relates to the history of Old Trafford previously being strawberry fields."
"It's been a really fun project to work on and it's been great to hear all the positive feedback from the local community about the mural," adds Lomas. "It also felt good to work on something so positive about people coming together when the past year has been taken over by distance and differences."
You can expect more murals dotted around Old Trafford from artists including Russ Meehan (Qubek/Mural Life), Martene Rourke, Jamie Rennie, Sam Owen Hull, Lynda Sterling and Donna Michelle Griffith.
