Sculptor Alex Chinneck has today unveiled his latest installation at Milan Design Week, taking over an entire abandoned building to create the illusion that the façade has been zipped off.

The immersive artwork, which also lights up at night, shows off Chinneck's unique talent for combining art, architecture and theatre in his work, manifested on a monumental scale.

The architecture itself, both inside and out, has been transformed, taking on new and unexpected shapes. "The walls and floors have become metaphors for a process of transformation, evoking—through imaginative portals—seemingly infinite routes to a newly imagined future," as the installation is described.

Chinneck adds: "By taking familiar materials and architectural forms and making them behave in extraordinary ways, we are working with IQOS to change visitors’ perceptions of what is possible.

"Through the repeated use of the zipper, we have opened up the fabric of a seemingly historic Milanese building to playfully re-imagine what lies behind its facade, floors and walls. Ethereal light pours through each opening, filling the space with colour and filling the work with a sense of positivity and potential."

The installation, known as IQOS World in collaboration with Philip Morris International, is on display during Milan Design Week 2019 until 14 April 2019. Discover more about the Alex Chinneck at alexchinneck.com.
