The Twittersphere has once again gone into meltdown over the latest Banksy news. The elusive artist has announced the opening of the Walled Off Hotel (officially open to the public from 11 March 2017), directly next to Bethlehem's West Bank barrier.
The aim of the project is to encourage tourists to the war-torn area, with 10 rooms – priced from £25 per night – decorated in true Banksy style. Combining art and protest, the stunt has been described as a genuine business venture, to provide jobs and promote the work of local artists. This also forms a greater purpose to open up dialogue between the Israelis and Palestinians.
The colonial-themed hotel is staffed by locals, and each room is kitted out with politically-fuelled, engaging works, such as a mural depicting a pillow fight between an Israeli border policeman and a Palestinian.
Banksy is no stranger to Bethlehem, first visiting the area over a decade ago. During visits to the Palestinian territories, the street artist left his creative mark on the barrier, which is now overlooked by the hotel's windows.
