China has scooped first place in the World Design Rankings, making it the most creative country on the planet.
That's according to the A' Design Awards – one of the largest art and design competitions in the world. Each year, the organisation tots up all of its awards to see how each of the 106 participating countries fair in terms of winners and then presents the results through its own Rankings.
In 2019, China won 67 Platinum Awards, making it the clear leader. It was followed by the United States, Japan, Italy, UK, Hong Kong, Turkey, Taiwan, Germany and Australia – all of which topped the charts last year.
Six new countries joined the 2019-2020 rankings: Macedonia, Maldives, Lao, Swaziland, Kenya and Armenia. The top 10 did not change significantly this year, except for China stealing the top gong from the US for the first time.
If you want to delve further into the data, you can see each country's strengths and weaknesses in various creative fields. For example, you can see whether Italy is better in fashion design, furniture or graphics.
