Graphic designer Chris Sanders is the unstoppable force behind the new Coventry Design Festival, which has launched this month (with a gorgeous identity) to celebrate the city's creative heritage and place it firmly on the design map.
Known for its incredible cathedral, a hub for watch, clock, and motor industries, and the famous Lady Godiva, Coventry recently won the title of UK City of Culture 2021. But with Covid-19 hurting local creatives, Chris wanted to do something positive to help.
"I wanted to support like-minded designers and artists through these dark times," Chris tells Creative Boom. "Coventry's creative history is incredible, and I hope the Festival can play a part in celebrating that. I'm passionate about pushing the city forward, and by bringing together UK-wide talent, I believe we can become a significant date in the creative calendar."
With a growing presence on social media and an army of local volunteers who are "passionate about driving the festival's vision", it looks as though Chris' idea has brought a much-needed dose of cheer to Coventry and the surrounding area. The event already promises incredible speakers, hands-on workshops as well as mental health safe spaces, one-to-one mentoring sessions and live podcasts.
"I want to give people a reason to visit. Whether that's a fresh-faced graduate looking for mentoring opportunities or an amateur illustrator that's interested in our workshops. The Festival has been designed to encourage everyone to participate regardless of skill or experience," Chris adds.
The first Coventry Design Festival will take place Friday 20 May 2022. To stay updated or to find out how to get involved, visit coventrydesignfestival.squarespace.com.
