The groundbreaking exhibition Bigger & Closer transforms Manchester's Aviva Studios into a canvas of artistic discovery. We went to its grand opening this week, and it was nothing short of spectacular.
Walking into David Hockney's Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) felt like stepping into a kaleidoscope of colour, joy, and wonder. This wasn't just an exhibition showcasing the renowned British artist's work—it was an intimate window into his thoughts, inspirations, and creative processes.
Housed in Manchester's cutting-edge Aviva Studios, run by Factory International, the show's immersive nature brought Hockney's art to life in ways I've never experienced before.
Not familiar with David Hockney or his work? This is the perfect chance to change that. Running until 25 January 2025, the exhibition offers an unprecedented, multi-sensory journey through the 87-year-old artist's evolution. It's far from the typical setup of framed pictures on white walls, where you stand around trying to look intelligent and thoughtful.
Instead, the moment you enter the space, you're transported through a meticulously crafted journey spanning 60 years of the Bradford-born artist's remarkable career, featuring both iconic and previously unseen works. (For more details, read our first-hand report of the show at London's King's Cross last year.)
With a unique personal commentary by David himself and an original score by composer Nico Muhly, the show, directed by Mark Grimmer of 59 Productions, offers a holistic artistic narrative. The rousing music brought a tear to my eye at one point, I was so moved by the experience, being a big fan of his work.
Hockney's lifelong fascination with media and technology takes centre stage. The exhibition showcases his experimental approach, from innovative photography techniques to iPad drawings, revealing how he continually pushes artistic boundaries.
The experience is divided into six themed chapters, each offering a window into his creative process. From his Los Angeles period to recent works in Normandy, visitors will witness the artist's journey through landscapes, perspectives and artistic mediums.
What truly sets this show apart is its immersive nature. The four towering walls are just the beginning—the floor becomes part of the canvas, making it a full sensory feast. Each segment surprised and delighted me in equal measure, combining Hockney's work with his narration in a way that was both playful and profound. I often laughed out loud or marvelled at his boundless creativity and childlike wonder.
Hearing Hockney's voice throughout added a deeply personal touch. His candid commentary and joyful chuckles revealed his unshakeable passion for art. Knowing he personally curated the exhibition made it even more special—every detail bore his unmistakable stamp.
Some chapters stood out as particularly memorable. His iPad paintings, presented through time-lapse recordings, were a highlight for me. It's inspiring to see an artist of his stature embrace new technology so wholeheartedly. Another standout moment was his humorous recounting of how he tried—and failed—to capture the Grand Canyon with a camera before turning to paint it instead.
Factory International's thoughtful setup also deserves praise. Allowing 100 people into the space at a time created an unhurried atmosphere where you could truly lose yourself in the experience. Although we stayed for an hour, the time flew by as Hockney guided us through his life and career.
Following Hockney's return to the UK in July 2023, this exhibition feels like a homecoming celebration. It offers both lifelong fans and new audiences an intimate glimpse into the mind of one of Britain's most beloved contemporary artists.
Aviva Studios, designed by the world-renowned Office for Metropolitan Architecture, provides a fitting backdrop for his expansive vision. A section of the vast warehouse space becomes a canvas, allowing the artist's work to breathe and expand in unprecedented ways.
In short, Bigger & Closer is more than an exhibition—it's an invitation to see the world through the eyes of a true artistic visionary. A triumphant masterpiece, it takes place until 25 January 2025 at Aviva Studios, Water Street, Manchester, M3 4JQ. Tickets start at £20. You really mustn't miss it.
