Harmonics in Space: Fred Butler invites us to explore the energy of chromotherapy

As we continue to battle the winter months, a new exhibition by Fred Butler at NOW Gallery will provide an uplifting relief from London's cold, dark streets, taking us gratefully into the lightness of spring. Harmonics in Space will transform the Greenwich Penisula space into a destination for wellbeing, where you'll be able to explore the energy of chromotherapy to find joy in light and colour.

Available to view for free from today until 29 April 2018, the show includes "healing spheres" as a key feature – three-dimensional sculptures that invite you to submerge your heads inside to experience a range of colourful lights. Apparently, the benefit of this type of light and colour therapy enables an "interplay between the conscious and unconscious levels of the psyche, stimulating the imagination and releasing creativity".

The significance of these sculptures ties into Fred’s ongoing interest in wellbeing, and after studying Rudolf Laban’s theory of Harmonics in Space, which suggested the body is made up of polyhedral shapes – the smallest being a tetrahedron, located in the centre of the body. "Constant deskwork and hunching over electronic devices cause the tetrahedron to become blocked," explains Fred. "Harmonics in Space will encourage you to take a step back from everyday life and stand, breathe, move and expand your chest; engaging the whole body and allowing yourself to tap into the awareness of being alive."

As with shape, Fred believes that colour has a profound affect on moods, emotions and daily life. "We need a balance of all the colour vibrations in sunlight to nourish us energetically," she adds. "Colour is intrinsic to my practice and I want to use that tool to attract, inspire and excite a new audience to NOW Gallery making it a true destination with this playful installation."

During your gallery visit, you'll also be invited to try your hand at origami, to create an exclusive colourful cosmic creature to match your mood. This element of the exhibition will allow you to switch off, contemplate and make.

And, in keeping with the title and sensory theme of Harmonics in Space, sound is also principle to the exhibition. Soundtracks have always been integral to Fred’s work, from live presentations at London Fashion Week and fashion films made with Red Bull Studios, and the installation at NOW Gallery will be no different. You will be able to wear your own individual Beats wireless headphones to hear unique, uplifting music as a sonic journey through the exhibition.
