"Multi-storey is a play on words, it could just as easily be called ‘Multi-story’", explains Mark Elsmore, winner of the Winsor & Newton Award for painting. "Within the car park there are lots of stories and no stories, it’s up to the viewer to imagine the chapters."
A self-taught artist, Mark was born in the Potteries, North Staffordshire. His family worked in the Pottery Industry for five generations, and he has been painting professionally since 1994.
A member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Wirral Society of Arts, Mark regularly exhibits nationally and won first prize in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2012. His work was selected for this year's Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Exhibition from well over a thousand entries.
In addition to Multi-storey, he has three other works exhibited in the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 206th Exhibition, all depicting urban scenes in exquisite detail. They can be seen at Mall Galleries until 21 April 2018.
The exhibition has over 400 works on display in total and all are for sale, with works starting from £450. To find out more, visit royalinstituteofpaintersinwatercolours.org.
