After months of speculation, Secret 7” – the annual project that invites the world’s leading artists and creatives to design one-of-a-kind record sleeves for charity – has revealed which designers are responsible for each of the 700 records.
This year, artists including Sir Anish Kapoor, Sir Paul Smith, Jenny Holzer, George Hardie, Gavin Turk, Cheryl Dunn, Thierry Noir, Marina Willer, Tom Dixon, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Bob & Roberta Smith, Anthony Burrill, Rob Ryan, Jean Jullien, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Juno Calypso, Frank Bowling, Anthony Lister, musician Stuart Murdoch and hundreds more created sleeve artwork for the show.
However, unlike most exhibitions or art sales, Secret 7” keeps the identities of the designers responsible for each artwork a heavily guarded secret for the duration of the show. This week, all the records went on sale to the public: only then were the designers matched up with their sleeves and revealed.
The seven tracks featured in this year's exhibition were:
John Lennon – Imagine
Etta James – At Last
Max Richter – Dream 3
The Jam – Art School
Tame Impala – The Less I Know The Better
Chvrches – Clearest Blue
Jack Garratt – Worry
All remaining sleeves from this week's sale are being put up for sale on Amnesty International's eBay page.
Also up for auction are seven custom-made Rega RP1 turntables, hand-painted by renowned French artist Thierry Noir and the Secret Seeburg – a beautiful, limited edition 1966 Seeburg Mustang jukebox containing the entire Secret 7" back catalogue, that has been designed by acclaimed designers Michael Marriott and Staf Schmooland repurposed to work with Sonos multi-room technology.
In addition to collaborating with Sonos Studio, Secret 7” partnered with Universal Music UK once again for the fifth successive year. The project was founded by Kevin King and Jordan Stokes whilst the former worked at the company in 2012, and all the music involved throughout the project has been drawn from the Universal Music catalogue.
