World's first David Bowie sculpture to be unveiled in Aylesbury

It's been just over two years since the world lost music legend, David Bowie. In that time, there has been an outpouring of international grief, which has manifested itself in all manner of tributes–from street art to documentaries. Now, in a world-first, the sleepy market town of Aylesbury will pay tribute to the superstar with a dedicated sculpture, which celebrates some of Bowie's best-known looks.

Although it may seem an unusual spot for the artwork, Aylesbury is home to the music club where Bowie premiered Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

Bowie is said to have formed The Spiders From Mars with Mick Ronson, Woody Woodmansey and Trevor Boulder in the Friars Aylesbury dressing room and referenced Aylesbury Market Square in the first line of Five Years – ‘Pushing through the Market square – so many mothers crying’.

On the Saturday after Bowie’s passing, David Stopps and his wife Sue, owners and promoters of Friars Aylesbury, organised a celebration of Bowie’s life, which led to a petition to create the commemorative statue. A Kickstarter campaign raised £115,000, and internationally renowned sculptor Andrew Sinclair, who has produced works for The Queen, was commissioned to create the work.

The unveiling of the sculpture will take place on 25 March 2018, where there will be live music and Bowie's videos projected in the market square. Fans will also have the opportunity to purchase a maquette of the statue alongside other memorabilia.
