London-based agency Zak Group has worked with the Barbican for the past couple of years on its gorgeous series of publications for shows at its gallery space The Curve, with the latest this lovely tome for Richard Mosse. Entitled Incoming, the book presents full-bleed imagery by the conceptual documentary photographer, showcasing his technique of using thermographic equipment to create immersive artworks about the refugee crisis to full effect.
The design is minimal and the typography bold, allowing the imagery to take pride of place. “The images are vivid and unsparing but have a degree of abstraction: skin tones cannot be differentiated, while inverted gradations add distance,” says Zak Group.
For the cover of Incoming, the agency used a night vision image, which was printed using metallic ink to create a beguiling and haunting sheen. “Equally seductive and brutal, reproductions of stills from the video installation span double page spreads and are juxtaposed by earlier analog photographic works,” the studio adds.
