The name 'Hey', is not only a moniker for the Barcelona studio, but an ethos – a smile, a surprise, a welcome shock to the system – and every form of communication that comes out of its studio adheres to this.
Regarded as one of the most innovative and celebrated European design agencies of recent years, Hey is capable of working in a variety of mediums and fields, uniting both spheres of graphic design and illustration seamlessly.
Now you can enjoy seeing some of its best work in a new book published by Counter-Print entitled Hey: Design & Illustration. Covering clients such as Monocle, Paypal, Nokia and Uniqlo, as well as the promotional pieces and illustrations, the book demonstrates the studio's versatility and gives an insight into how its ideas are hatched and its problems solved.
"What strikes us first, when we look at the body of work created by Hey, is a love for what they do. They say, 'if you love what you do, then you will never work another day in your life', and I think there is certainly some truth to that old adage," says Céline Leterme of Counter-Print. "To that effect, it is clear why Hey has picked up a cult-like status among its hundreds of thousands of social media fans, during its 10 years in design.
"Everything we love about design is celebrated within their work. From colour, shape and pattern to illustration and typography – these disparate elements, continuously intertwining to amaze, delight and enthrall us."
Of course, the Barcelona-based studio is renowned for its bright, playful graphics and its output is a fine example of what can be achieved, with a limited number of graphic devices, in order to bring about a strikingly arresting end result. It contrasts and clashes shapes and colours, while forms are bent, ripped and manoeuvred in endless ways – always culminating in something fresh; something new.
The woman that has coordinated, championed, crafted and carried the Hey banner for over 10 years is Verònica Fuerte. Fuerte set up the studio in 2007, after several years spent working for a variety of design studios in Barcelona.
Over time, she has built Hey into the multi-disciplinary studio that it is today, currently a five-person team. As their notoriety has grown, so has their client list; with larger names jumping on-board, including the likes of Apple, Wall Street Journal, and Penguin/Random House – all seduced by their bold, brightly-coloured, forward-thinking design work.
You can grab yourself a copy of Hey: Design & Illustration over at Counter-Print. Choose from four different colours. Priced at £15.
