Everything is Shit: Ilka & Franz's cheeky short film with an unexpected twist

If everything feels a bit, you know, shit at the moment, then this short film by London studio Ilka & Franz might raise a smile today.

The German/Austrian photo and director duo were "a bit bored with everything" in February and felt that "sometimes it feels like everything has been done already". So they thought, why not make a film about shit. Eventually, 'shit' turned into comparably innocent dog poo.

The film stars Yen Guo, who every day waits for the bus, and Ernie, who one day does his business in the bus shelter. You just know what's coming. "We made pretty much everything ourselves," Ilka tells Creative Boom. "From the set to the styling to lighting and camera, apart from our great HMUA team and assistant."

They shot it in a day in a studio in London back in February, before the UK went into lockdown. We felt it might brighten your day.

Ilka & Franz's work blurs the lines between portraiture and still life and is often humorous with an unexpected twist. While their unmistakable use of colour is vibrant and bold, their conceptual undertones are often subtle and of child-like naivety. They draw their inspiration from pop culture, kitsch and surrealism as they put a "playful spin on the ordinary".
